September 2010

Welcome back to a new year for Lockport College Women’s Club! We are fortunate to have Mary Lou Chamberlain, one of our own College Club members, as this month’s speaker. At the September meeting, she will teach us how to decorate with flowers and in doing so, we are sure to gain a deeper appreciation of them. Mary Lou has studied Flower Design, Creative Design, and Ikebana (Japanese Flower arranging). She is also a Master Flower Judge, and is a member of the New York State District Garden Club and the Youngstown Garden Club.

The flower-focused meeting will include a buffet dinner on October 7, 2010 at the Lockport Town and Country Club. Registration and Dutch treat cocktails will begin at 6:00 pm and the buffet will start at 6:30 pm. The cost of the event is $23. It will include garden salad, pasta salad, potato salad, relish tray, herbed baked chicken, sliced top round of beef au jus, pasta with red sauce, seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes, rolls and butter, assorted cookies, brownies, and coffee or tea. Reserve your spot before 9 pm on Sunday, October 3rd by calling your phone committee person (there have been some changes, so check before calling!) or emailing Sue Grigg at smmgrigg@aol.com. Remember that all meetings are guest meetings and this would be a perfect meeting to bring a friend!

Welcome back! I have a new favorite dessert that I thought I would share with you!
Almond Twists
1 pkg frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed
1 can Almond paste (make sure it is the paste)
Sugar
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Sprinkle surface with sugar. Unfold 1 pastry sheet on sugar. Roll out to 12 inch square. Divide almond paste in half. Divide half into small pieces and dot on half of the pastry. Fold pasty in half over paste, roll to 10x12 inch rectangle and then sprinkle with sugar. Fold in half again and roll to 10x12 inch rectangle again. Cut into 12 strips 1 inch wide. Twist into corkscrews and place on baking sheet (ungreased) about 2 inches apart. Continue with rest of pastry. Bake 18 to 22 min. or until puffed and golden brown. Remove from baking sheets immediately. Cool on wire rack. If desired, use the other pastry sheet and the rest of the almond paste to repeat.
