razz-a-ma-taz, be sure to attend our Christmas Party at 7 pm
Thursday, December 5, at the Lockport Town & Country Club.
We’ll have décor and dainty desserts in the Christmas mode, PLUS live jazz, swing, and Christmas songs with jazz duo Gil Pease and Gary Dieboldt.   The hostesses will be Karen Robison and Suzanne Kugler.
Guests are welcome. Cost is only $12 to get us all in the holiday spirit!  Reserve with your telephone lady by 8 PM Sunday, December 1.

-         Also coming up in 2014 is our major fund-raiser –on Sunday, April 6. We ask you please to turn in used baskets and new items to help fill them so that  our creative co-chairladies Pat Kennedy and Rosemary Dever can get to work!
-         Kathy Newman, as Sunshine Chairlady, is happy to spread a little cheer to members who you know could use it.
-         If you can receive the Megaphone via e-mail, please do it! 47 of us use e-mail and 53 use snail mail. E-mail saves us $27 every month, plus costs of printing and labels, according to Charlotte Lasher.
-         The next Board meeting will be 7 PM Jan. 19 at Anne O’Byrne’s, 12 Roosevelt Drive.

  NOVEMBER 2013

            Reflections on the life of the late Olivia (Ollie) McConnell, of Lockport, a 30-year College Club member and a well-known artist throughout WNY, will be given by Shelley Richards at the November 7 meeting of the Lockport College Women’s Club.  Ms. Richards, a former student of Miss McConnell, is Board Chairman of the Niagara County Genealogical Society.
            The 7 PM meeting at the Lockport Town & Country Club will feature a delicious dessert buffet. Cost is $12.  Guests are welcome. Just be sure to make reservations with a phone lady BEFORE 8 PM Sunday, November 3.
Hostesses will be Jeannine Benoit and Mary Beth Gammack.

-          Two books in memory of six deceased members have been placed in the Lockport Public Library. 
-          In September, longtime member and former officer Betty Bates passed away in Schenectady. A graduate of SUC Brockport, She joined College Club in 1966 and had taught in Lockport.
-          Gail Marshall made a gift to the scholarship fund in memory of Greta Aloisio and Shirley Chrzynowski and also in honor of Patty Russell for her years of dedicated service.  Our upbeat October speaker, David Kinyon, donated his stipend to scholarship.
-          If you know a member who could use some cheering-up, be sure to tell Sunshine Chairman Kathy Newman.
-          The next Board of Directors meeting will be at 7 PM Nov. 14 at the home of Judy Cummings, 27 Lindhurst Drive. Lockport.

    OCTOBER 2013

          Our first meeting of the NEW College Club Year is a forward-looking talk about the “Business Outlook for the Town of Lockport” by David Kinyon, the town’s Economic Development Coordinator. City residents should listen up, too, as David plans to cover development on Transit Road; the expansion of Yahoo’s Data Center and jobs, and the “Flight of Five”.
          We will meet at 7 PM Thursday, October 3, at the Lockport Town & Country Club for dessert. Cost is $12. The hostesses:  Dee Morotchie and Ann O’Byrne.  Feel free to bring a guest to this meeting or any future ones.

          The Board welcomed Jeannine Benoit as our new Ways & Means director. A member since 2000, Jeannine already has some “fashionable”
ideas for our April 2014 fund-raiser.  Our “basket ladies” ask that you bring any baskets to the meeting so they may fill them for April’s event.
**** * * * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * ** ** * * * * * * * * * * * **      Because out directories are now printed every other year, Dee Morotchie will have update sheets available this year, listing new members,  officers, the new Telephone Committee, and changes in address or ‘phone numbers. ANNOUNCEMENTS

-         Betty Chapman, of Albion, a member since 1950 and a SUC Brockport graduate, passed away in August.
-         The next Board meeting will be October 10 in the home of Anna Beth

-    President Patty Russell asks more interest from the membership in          filling the spots of those Board members who will complete their     terms          this year. It’s rewarding and a fine way to get to know people!

Be sure to attend our final meeting at 7 pm June 6 to watch a unique re-enactor, enjoy a dessert buffet, and meet a new member.

Brenda Reaves from the Niagara County Historical Society will portray Eliza Mossell, the wife of Aaron Mossell, a prominent Lockport businessman who made a significant contribution to education when he was successful in having his daughter admitted to an all-white school about 80 years ago. His action made Lockport an early leader in school integration.

          The April Fund -Raiser was a great success, enriching our coffers by $3975 according to Treasurer Ann Van Dusen with the basket auction providing a good share. The Board thanks everyone for their hard work. If you were unable to attend, donations for scholarships are still gratefully accepted by Ann!

          Our scholarship winner for 2013 is Katie Britt, who will attend Penn State, studying to become an aerospace engineer and maybe work for NASA!  Fifth in her class, she has a 100.6 average. The oldest of four children, Katie is the daughter of Maurice Britt, a retired sheriff’s deputy and Colleen Britt, a bank teller.
          Our other scholarship students are: Kelsey Stanley; Caroline Randall; Anna Robbins, and Lauren Currie

MAY 2013

Come to the May Banquet and meet the young woman who is our new                                 Scholarship Winner and her Mom!
          The May 2 celebration at the Lockport Town & Country Club will open at 6 pm with a cash bar and cheese and crackers for hors d’oeuvres, followed by dinner at 7pm.  
          Choose your entrée when you call your telephone lady -Please by 8 on Sunday, April 28.     The choices,  served with tossed salad, roasted baby potatoes, seasonal vegetables,  with apple pie for dessert,  are:  Chicken Florentine (with spinach and mushroom cream);  8 oz. Prime Rib au Jus, or Vegetarian Lasagna.  The cost is $27.  Hostesses are Marion Hannigan and Margo Covell.
           We also will be honoring 50-year College Club member Mary Anne Buddenhagen at the banquet.

          Good News about the April 14 Fund-raiser, where 100 baskets and good food, plus a down-home magician provided a memorable afternoon for all.  Financially, things are on the plus side, according to Treasurer Ann VanDusen.  Many thanks to the members who worked tirelessly (and tiredly) to enhance the scholarship fund’s bank balance!

          If you didn’t attend the March meeting, you missed the announcement that cards are available for anyone who would like to donate to the Scholarship Fund. 

          At the June meeting, we will continue the discussion about memorials for deceased members.

          We lost Carolyn Lange recently. A graduate of Skidmore College, she was a College Club member since 1954.

          The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be at 7 pm Thursday, May 9 at Judy Cumming’s home, 22 Lindhurst Drive.
