June 2011

Accessorize!
Leslie Muchow will present a program on accessorizing with jewelry on June 2nd. Consider wearing an outfit that you are trying to accessorize and she can help. It will be fun and fashionable. She will also have her jewelry for sale. The jewelry is priced from $8 to $42 and she accepts cash, checks, and credit cards. She carries both plus sizes and clip on earrings.
The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at the Holiday Inn. The dessert will be a fruit plate or Strawberry Shortcake. The cost is $10. Reservations should be made by calling the Telephone Committee or e-mailing smmgrigg@aol.com by 9:00 p.m. on May 29th.
At this meeting you will also be asked to serve and/or vote for the new board for college club and discuss changes to the constitution. The board discussed two items that need to be reviewed at the June meeting: the amount for the scholarships and our dues. The proposed changes are on the back of this Megaphone.
We also discussed how to recognize the 25-year members in the future. They are now receiving a pin at the May Banquet. How about if we pay for their dinner and gave them a certificate? This would allow the money from the pins (about $90 each) to be used for programs. What do you think?

Scholarship Winner
Caroline Randell was introduced at the May Banquet as our newest scholarship winner. She is a remarkable young woman, and the scholarship committee did a fantastic job in selecting her. She is going to be a PreMed student at Syracuse University. Her mother, Katherine Randell, also attended.

Special points of interest:

Monica Pullano announced that Felice Brodsky-Brinkley, Kay Whalen and Marcia Jacobi were honored for being involved in the club for 25 years.

A special THANK YOU to Kohl’s for decorating, providing the fashions, and contributing to our scholarship fund.

The Fashion Show made well over $4000; the baskets alone made over $1000. Thank you to everyone who worked to make it a success!

The June board meeting will be on the 9th at Monica Pullano at 7:00 pm.

The Fashion Show was fantastic, but our May Banquet is our most exciting meeting: We get to meet our scholarship winner. The May meeting will be at the Lockport Town and Country Club and the hostesses will be Mary Beth Gammack and Juliana Goelz. It will be on held on May 5th with a cash bar starting at 6:30pm and dinner served at 7:00. You have a choice of one from three entrees: Tuscan Penne Pasta sauteed in olive oil with sun dried tomatoes, red onion, black and green olives, mixed peppers, and garlic for $18.00; Seared Chicken Breast Marsala braised with mushrooms in Marsala demi-glace, baked potato, and vegetable for $26.00; or Char-Grilled Tournedos of Beef served with a truffle demi-glace, baked potato, and vegetable for $30.00. All entrees include a chef salad. The dessert is chocolate mousse cake and coffee or tea will be served.

The fashion show, “Spring Fever,” was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who worked to make it happen and to everyone who attended the event. The food was tasty and the service was wonderful. The Kohl’s fashions were fresh and inspiring. There were more baskets than last year, if you can believe it. The basket committee really outdid themselves. Come to the May meeting to find out more about the Fashion Show.

Special points of interest:
 Thank you to Katie Porter and Porter Farms for an engaging and informative presentation. If anyone wants to join or get more information, Monica Pullano is the coordinator for Lockport.

 The next board meeting will be held at Ann VanDusen’s home on May 12th at 7:00 pm. Please attend if you are interested in learning what happens at these meetings or if you are considering joining the board.

Veggie Co-Op

Last March Katie Porter was going to tell us about the Vegetable Co-op, but she was so busy with the veggies that she could not make it. We really wanted to hear how the Co-0p worked, so we contacted her again and she agreed to reschedule. In the Porter Farms presentation, she will explain how Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) keeps local farmers connected with local consumers. Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,300 miles to get to your dinner table! The CSA provides over twenty weeks of fresh, local produce that is a viable alternative to this "long distance" relationship most of us have with our food. The Porters also provide recipes that use the vegetables. They will make you look at veggies and their use in a whole different light. This March 3, 21011 dessert meeting will be held at the Lockport Town and Country Club. Registration is at 6:30 pm. The cost will be $9.00 and will feature a dessert station with variety of dessert and fresh fruit selections. A Cash bar will also be available. The hostesses will be Dee Morotchie and Ann O'Byrne. Please call the telephone committee by 9 pm on Sunday, February 27th to reserve your spot.

Sorry we had the cancel the January meeting, but we will try to have Mike Tucker later this year.

Do you have a friend that would be good at one of the
many positions to help run this club? Could you work with someone to do a job? For example, Marcia Jacobi and I share the job of bringing you the Megaphone. When I cannot go to a meeting or a board meeting, she covers for me. I type the Megaphone and she checks it. Yes, it is one position but there are two of us to share the duties. You can do it too. Think about it. Patty Russell has volunteered to stay on the board as Secretary to help and advise, but she is stepping down from the position of President and we need a replacement. Please talk to Patty Russell or any of the current board members to learn more about these opportunities.

Special points of interest:

 Did you realize that being a board member only requires 28 hours per year!

 The next board meeting will be held at Patty Russell’s house on March 10th.

 “Spring Fever” – On April 10th Kohl’s will again present the fashion show at the Holiday Inn. We need models and a Model Coordinator.

 Do you have any spare empty baskets? The wonderful Basket Committee needs more baskets for the Fashion Show. Please call, drop off, or give them to Pat Kennedy

Wow, was our December meeting great! We
exchanged books and had actors from the
musical Scrooge sing for us. They were dressed
for their parts and they told us how they got involved in theater.

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT OUR FASHION SHOW WILL BE HERE! The basket raffle committee is looking for your help. Do you have any Christmas presents to "re-gift" to College Club? Or any items to donate to use in a basket? How about baby, art, Christmas, pet, entertainment, books, or games to name a few?! We are creative—you donate it, and we'll put it in a basket! If you have an individual piece of art, antique, or item that could be raffled on its own, that will work, too! For pick up of items, call Patricia Kennedy (433-8848) and she will arrange for a pick-up or feel free to bring items to the next couple of meetings. We'll be there!!!

Special points of interest:

 LCWC needs a Secretary – could you do the job? The position only requires taking notes at two meetings per month. Think about it!

 The next board meeting will be held at Dee Morotchie’s on Feb. 10th at 7 pm.

 Alert! Alert! There was a mistake in the last newsletter: the date for the Fashion Show is April 10th!!! We regret the error.

 Do you have any spare empty baskets? The wonderful Basket Committee needs more baskets for the Fashion Show. Please call, drop off, or give them to Pat Kennedy.
