FEBRUARY 2016

Our next meeting will be held on February 4,2016 at the Lockport Town and Country Club at 7:00. Our presenter will be Mr. Charles Begley. Mr. Begley grew up in Brooklyn and Long Island. He attended Albany State College (now SUNY Albany) majoring in Latin and the classics, minoring in education. Upon graduation he received a job offer at LHS. He retired in 2001 after teaching for 42 years. (Patty Russell was in his first class!) He currently teaches the classics at NU. Mr. Begley will recreate Raphael Beck, an artist born in PA who moved to Lockport in the 1880’s. Once established here, he married Frances Hall whose family home became the Tuscarora Club. Mr. Begley will share more about the artist and his family history. He will also discuss some of the artist’s works including a famous portrait of President McKinley and the logo for the PanAm Exhibition.  The cost of the meeting including dessert will be $12. Please make your reservations with the telephone committee by 7:00 on Sunday, January 31 and indicate your choice of dessert or fruit plate when you make your reservation. Our hostesses will be Valerie Hamluk and Elsbeth Hamluk. Hope to see you there!

We received a lovely thank you note from Lockport Cares, Mrs. Brittin. She also had a request that they could use gently used or new bras, especially larger sizes. We will be collecting them at our meetings for the next few months.

Anna Beth Kinyon, our treasurer, reports that 83 members have paid their dues. Dues that are late are $50 and can be paid at the meeting.  If you prefer you may mail your check to Anna Beth Kinyon, 117 Windermere, Lockport, NY 14094.

Please mark Sunday April 10 on your calendars for “Sunday for Scholarship” our annual fundraiser for our scholarship. Lucille Cannata and Shirley Frombgen are heading up the effort. You will be receiving more information in the mail shortly. Your support is important to our club!

The basket committee, headed by Rosemary Dever (434-9972) and Pat Kennedy (433-8848), is looking for volunteers to assist with baskets. You can help once or many times. Please give them a call. They are also looking for new items to put in the baskets. Popular items are wine, gift cards and consumables. The baskets are a major part in the success of our fundraiser.

We are on Facebook thanks to Jeannine Benoit. Jeanine is looking for pictures to post on our page. Please contact her if you have some to share.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on February 11 at the home of Anna Beth Kinyon, 117 Windermere Rd, Lockport at 7:00.
