 June 2023

Please join us to celebrate the 100th year of Lockport College Women’s Club at our final meeting of this year on Thursday, June 1, 2023. We will enjoy dinner, a historical proclamation recognizing College Club, and a program about a part of Lockport history.

Our meeting will be held at 80 Main. Doors will open at 5:30 and dinner will be served at 6 pm. Menu choices are: Pork Tenderloin with fire-roasted peach chutney OR Panko Parmesan-Crusted Chicken with white wine feta cream sauce. Dinners include bread and butter, potatoes and vegetables, coffee, tea and any soft drink ordered from the bar. The Club will provide a piece of our celebratory anniversary cake for everyone!

Please make your reservations with the Telephone Committee by Sunday, May 28, 2023 before 7 pm. Hostesses will be Judy Cummings and Anna Beth Kinyon.

Our speaker in June is Megan Cassidy Hall, the author of “Sutherland”. She will share how she came to write her book of historical fiction based on the lives of the Seven Sutherland Sisters. Her story details the Sutherland Sisters early life of poverty to becoming one of the most celebrated acts in Barnum and Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth. They were known both for their singing and their 7foot long hair. Megan Cassidy Hall grew up in Lockport and is a Professor of English at SUNY Schenectady. Please come and hear one of Lockport’s own share her story of writing about the historical Southerland Sisters who were also from Lockport, New York.

In addition to our program, we will also read a proclamation from Mayor Michelle Roman recognizing the 100th Year of Lockport College Women’s Club and its presence in this community since 1922.

Two new members will be introduced at our June meeting. They are Dr. Martha Kershaw and Leslie Tobin. We look forward to meeting them both and welcoming them into College Club.

Our Scholarship fundraiser “Sunday for Scholarship” was a big success! Thank you to all our members and friends for their support.

Thank you to Madeline Angelo and Ida Quade for co-chairing the event. Thank you also to Daniele Priest and Shirley Frombgen for co-chairing the ticket committee. Thank you to Anna Beth Kinyon and Peg D’Amato for their help setting up the Basket Raffle. Thank you to the members for all the baskets, donations, great ticket sales, successful basket raffle, and help selling tickets at the fundraiser.

Donations to the fundraiser totaled an astounding $2,735.00.

Proceeds from Basket Raffle, Special Raffle and Split Club were $1815.00. Proceeds from 86 luncheon tickets sold (profit of $10.00 each) was $860. After expenses, the profit from the fundraiser was ***$4,896.00***. At our fundraiser, Kim Meal proposed a “$100.00 Challenge” in honor of our 100th Year! The challenge has taken off because of the generosity of our members and our shared belief in the importance of women and education. Thank you, Kim for your great idea, your presentation of it at the fundraiser, and the benefit to our scholarship award winners.

The $100.00 Challenge has raised $2,011.00 to date with the proceeds going to our Scholarship Fund. Thank you to the following members who contributed $100.00: Kim Meal, Lorraine Sparks, Lucille Cannata, Mary Beth Wilson, Val

Hamluk, Gail Marshall, Isabelle Murphy, Anna Beth Kinyon, and Patricia Russell. Paula Falsioni contributed $1,111.00 in memory of her parents Daniel and Victoria Falsioni, and deceased members Dee Morotchie, and Donna Bergman. Thank you all for accepting the $100.00 Challenge.

At our May Scholarship and Recognition Dinner, Mary Beth Gammack was recognized for reaching the milestone of 50 years of membership in College Club. Congratulations, Mary Beth.

We were privileged to meet our two scholarship award winners also. This year the Scholarship Committee chose Camryn Schiavitti who will be attending Nazareth College to pursue a degree in physical therapy. Camryn attended with her mother and gave a wonderful thank you to the group. She shared her plans to study at Nazareth and be a part of their women’s soccer team. Her determination and hard work led to success and we wish her well at Nazareth.

The second award winner was Camryn Becken. Camryn will be attending NCCC and then a four- year school. Camryn thanked the group via Zoom and impressed us with her poise as she shared her academic plans and the work ethic that brought her to graduating from high school in three years. We also wish Camryn well at NCCC and look forward to hearing from both of them. Thank you to Margo Covell who chaired the Scholarship Committee this year and is stepping down. Thank you also to Kim Meal who has chaired in the past and served many years on Scholarship Committee. Kim is also stepping down. The two new members of Scholarship Committee are Ann O’Byrne and Nancy Fisher. Volunteers are needed! Please let me know if you would be interested in working on Programs as Vice-President. Co-chairing with a friend has been successful. We have lots of program ideas already so please let me know if you would like to be more involved.

We also need co-chairmen for next year’s fundraiser. Many aspects are already in place. Please call me for details.

In April, we lost long-time member Cathie Tobin. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family. She was on the Board with Patty Russell when she wrote the Megaphone with Marcia Jacobi. A memorial book has been arranged at Lockport Public Library from the members of Lockport College Women’s Club. Please note in your directory that Anna Beth Kinyon’s phone number is now 716- 725-2059.

The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for June 8, 2023 at the home of Anna Beth Kinyon. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM. Please let Anna Beth know if you are unable to attend.

Thank you to Patty Russell as always who has been our tireless leader for yet another successful year. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the June meeting.
